City of Sydney Library Lunchtime Conversations are a series of free talks with authors, artists and experts.

Join award-winning photographer Dr John Janson-Moore to explore his photographs of Covid-19, the ongoing climate crisis and Aboriginal deaths in custody.

Through his photography, John explores the psychological and social response to these issues. His work asks, what can photography reveal about how we grapple with some of the most significant issues of our time?

John considers these inextricably linked issues to be at the epicentre of a dramatic, society-wide shift over the last 12 months. This shift has starkly revealed the deep, underlying fissures that lie at the very foundations of our country.

At the shift’s coalface are stories of activists, grass roots community movements and concerned citizens. Those most impacted by these monumental upheavals also must be heard: young people, elders, frontline workers and the vulnerable. Take a photographic dive into these complex issues that linger beyond the daily news cycle.

The guest speaker’s presentation will be followed by a short Q&A session.

Dr John Janson-Moore

John is an award-winning photographer, filmmaker and multidisciplinary audio-visual artist. His documentary work focuses on a range of issues with a strong focus on the social justice and Aboriginal rights movements across Australia. Using moving and still images, his artistic work is conceptual, traversing a precarious line between the real and imaginary.

John’s work has been exhibited and published nationally and internationally. He was a collaborative artist at Sydney Biennale NIRIN 2020 and a winner of the Moran Prize for Contemporary Photography. His films have been shown on the ABC, SBS, and at film festivals around the world. He also holds a Doctorate in Creative Arts from the University of Technology Sydney.
