This course is a basic intro course open to beginners with no previous experience or those looking to keep practicing in a supported class, perfect for students looking to try some basic hand building and wheelthrowing in a relaxed and open environment.
It includes an introduction to both wheelthrowing and handbuilding techniques. It will combine group and one-on-one demonstrations as well as time for students to work under supervision.
Week 1 introduction to clay, studio safety, hand building skills and techniques.
Week 2 is a 2hr session of wheelthrowing, students make between 3-5 pots of their choice. We begin with a demonstration with questions then we all make a pot at the same pace.
Week 3 wheelthrowing and demonstrations on how to make shapes that go up instead of just out. Students make another 3-5 pieces.
Week 4 trimming class. Students trim as many pieces as possible (average 4-6 pieces get kept).
Week 5 glazing class. We start with basic glaze theory and then begin glazing the pieces and preparing them for firing.
NOTE: This 5 week course can be extended into a 6 or 8 week course by repeating the throwing and trimming classes. The longer the course is, the less structure is needed i.e. in the latter part of a longer course students can decide for themselves if they want to be trimming or throwing. Additionally, they can bring their own projects and we work towards that.
*Clay, glazing and firing costs are included in this workshop up to a total weight of 1.2kg. Any items beyond this weight will be charged for bisque and glaze firing in accordance with our current firing fee structure of $10/kg.
