Can AI help with weather and climate prediction?

How do we predict weather and climate, and why aren't forecasts better? Can artificial intelligence (AI) help?

Join us for an insightful talk exploring how AI is now a proven force in weather forecasting, with the potential to deliver more detailed forecasts, better seasonal forecasts and better forecasting tools, for the developing world.

While AI is already transforming weather prediction, its application to climate forecasting presents a different set of challenges. This talk will explore whether the same advances can be achieved for climate forecasts and examine some of the key issues involved, including how AI adapts to new situations, hallucinations, the huge amounts of data needed to train large AI models, and the difficulty of figuring out how AI actually works.

Despite these challenges, AI offers exciting possibilities, not only for improving forecasts but also for deepening our understanding of the Earth's climate system.
