It’s great to listen to writers talk about their books, yet we often feel like offering our opinions on the story and characters, and hearing what other readers think.

To that end, BAD has created a bookclub just for fans of crime writing. Come along to the new BAD Sydney Crime Book Club at the Sydney Mechanics’ School of Arts on the fourth Wednesday of the month from February to November.

At each session, the conversation will be led by a member of the BAD board, each an expert in various aspects of crime writing. Plus, if we can get the author there to join in, we will! Places are limited and booking in advance is essential. See you there!

Venue: Tom Keneally Centre, Level 3, Sydney Mechanics’ School of Arts, 280 Pitt Street Sydney

Time: 12:30 - 1:30pm (arrive from 12:00pm and bring your lunch)

Cost: $10 per session, bookings essential

Benefits: BAD book-clubbers receive a 20% discount from Abbey’s Bookstore in Sydney CBD for each month’s selected title after ticket purchase, plus the opportunity to meet the author at the session where we discuss their book (*attending authors will be advertised prior to the event). Every month there will also be a lucky door prize of your next great crime read!

July Pick: The Mushroom Tapes: Conversations on a triple murder trial by Helen Garner, Chloe Hooper and Sarah Krasnostein, hosted by Catherine du Peloux Menagé

The mushroom poisoning cases in Leongatha fascinated Australia and the world. Three renowned literary journalists and writers Helen Garner, Chloe Hooper and Sarah Krasnostein sat in on the trial and collaborate on The Mushroom Tapes: Conversations on a triple murder trial, a book which reads like a podcast. ‘Undoubtedly the nonfiction book of the season’ according to Readings bookshop. What will your verdict be?
