Join ceramic artists Jordan Gower and Kirsten Coelho in conversation as they discuss Gower's exhibition 'Does the moon know the well?' at UNSW Galleries.
'Does the moon know the well?' marks Gower’s first institutional exhibition, bringing together an ambitious new body of work that reimagines forms and surfaces developed through his practice as a production artist. Together, Gower and Coelho reflect on shared approaches to ceramics, form, and materiality, discussing the shifting boundary between functional craft and contemporary art.
This program is part of ‘Artist to Artist’, an ongoing series of conversations at UNSW Galleries, bringing together practitioners with shared interests and material concerns.
Jordan Gower is a South Australian ceramic artist and Head of Ceramics at JamFactory, Adelaide. Working across exhibition practice, studio ceramics, and arts leadership, Gower’s practice investigates materials, encounters, and ontology through refined wheel-thrown and sculptural ceramic objects. Trained in ceramics through JamFactory’s Associate Development Program (2016–17), he received a mentorship with porcelain wheel-thrower Phil Elson and went on to establish the production studio Aburi, creating bespoke tableware for award-winning South Australian restaurants and wineries.
Kirsten Coelho works in porcelain creating forms and vessels that fuse the formal with the abstract. Her work has been influenced by the history of objects—jugs, flasks, bowls, beakers—which she reiterates in meditations on material culture and social history. Coelho’s work reflects the relationship between objects and the spaces they inhabit, with particular focus on the domestic space. Her work is driven by the intersection of domestic use and historical context, questioning how objects can embody both the practicality of everyday life and the rich cultural narratives of the past.
