The Lunar New Year installation is an inspiration to a tradition in the northern part of China. In welcoming and celebrating a new life, it is a custom to invite family and friends to come together to make a “100 Good Wishes Quilt”.
Each person will contribute a patch of cloth with a wish for the body, Part of the patch of cloth goes into the quilt for the baby, and the other part of the cloth will be in a memory notebook with the wishes for the child.
The quilt symbolises luck, energy and good wishes from all the families and friends who contributed the fabric. The quilt is then passed down from generation to generations.
Drawings are collected from children between the age of 4 to 16, expressing their experience and memories of Chinatown. These are then compiled into 6 different collages and to be displayed across building foyers, entrances and shopfronts in and adjacent to Chinatown, encouraging visitors to navigate through the different buildings and laneways of Chinatown.
