When

Thursday 16 May from 5:30pm to 8pm

Spark Club is joining Climate Action Week Sydney in May to host Professor Martin Green, Sydney's own unassuming climate hero. Grant McDowell will host a live fireside chat with Martin and Professor Renate Egan from UNSW.

Martin is Scientia Professor at the University of New South Wales, Sydney and is handing over the Directorship of the Australian Centre for Advanced Photovoltaics to Renate this year. Martin is celebrating 50 years at UNSW and 40 years since he invented the PERC solar cell in 1983. He and his team developed the PERC technology to its full potential over the decades and accounted for 91.2% of worldwide silicon solar module production in 2021 (CPIA).

In our conversation, we will explore Martin’s belief that a patent for PERC would slow down adoption and limit the scale needed for extraordinary cost reduction. This single generous decision, and ongoing development of the PERC cell efficiency by Martin and his team, unlocked the global energy transition. We’ll share the highlights of Martin’s career with the audience and gain a rare insight to the turning points of solar PV development in China and the rest of the world.

We'll hear from Renate about what the future holds for the Australian Centre for Advanced Photovoltaics (ACAP) on the leading edge of photovoltaic science globally.

Spark Club is looking forward to playing a role at Climate Action Week Sydney this year. Since 2016 we've been hosting live events and bringing the cleantech community together to celebrate and learn from founders and leaders in the energy transition. Martin and Renate have played an outsized role in our sector and this is a wonderful opportunity to hear firsthand how PERC changed the world, amazing. Highly recommended.
