Architects of Air - Mirazozo

Architects of Air’s latest luminarium Mirazozo is a dazzling maze of winding paths and soaring domes. The large-scale inflatable sculpture, which comes to nearly 1200m², will take over the Sydney Opera House Forecourt from January 3 to 27, 2011.

Constructed of translucent vinyl, the multi-sensory space welcomes and inspires everyone who journeys inside. Islamic art and architecture, Archimedean solids and Gothic cathedrals meld together to form an awe-inspiring monument to the unexpected beauty of colour and light.

Built in 2010 and when erected measuring 60m x 18m by 10m, Mirazozo makes the most extensive use of the “illuminated seam” first explored in Architects of Air’s previous work, Amococo. The internal pattern of neon-lit seams creates a meditative configuration, where perception and reality can shift. It is the same effect created by the geometric design of Islamic art and architecture.

Visitors receive a map and are invited to remove their shoes before passing through the airlock. Once inside they can wander freely or just lie back and enjoy the structure’s ambience. Featuring several ‘dodecadomes’ (domes based on adaptations of the dodecahedron) and a large central dome – the largest open space structure that Architects of Air have ever built – many people find the luminaria a place for rest or meditation, where the environment can be both stimulating and calming at the same time.

The radiance of the daylight shining through the luminarium’s coloured PVC is surprisingly bright and directly impacts the senses. Through labyrinthine tunnels and cavernous domes, visitors are immersed in a medium of saturated and subtle hues. Vivid reflections of liquid colour spill across curved walls transforming faces and clothing.

No two visits are alike: visitors are excited to discover how different colours blend or resonate, and how the atmosphere inside alters according to the changing weather and light outside. The experience is also affected by how the public inhabit the luminarium. Visitors have likened being inside the luminarium to being in a futuristic space station or the human body.
