Much of the classical and popular music we listen to in concert halls and on recordings has connections to and roots in folk music and stories. Early 20th century composers including Béla Bartók and Percy Grainger went right to the source, immersing themselves in the music and stories of local villages and communities to inspire their compositions, while more recently Peter Sculthorpe and Ross Edwards have drawn their inspiration from the stories, sounds and rhythms of Australia. Presenter Maria Lobytsyana will discuss these composers and talk about the impact of folk lore and music on works we hear performed today.
