Peter Robb, UTS Writer in Residence, will be talking about and reading from his new book ‘Lives’, and will also discuss his own life as a writer.
About his books:
Midnight in Sicily was published in Australia in October 1996 and is the first instalment in a trilogy including A Death in Brazil which claimed The Age’s Non-Fiction Book of the Year for 2004 and Street Fight in Naples: A Book of Art and Insurrection. Midnight in Sicily won the Victorian Premier’s Literary Prize for non-fiction in 1997. It has been published in ten other countries, including Denmark, Israel and Taiwan.
Peter Robb’s book about Caravaggio, titled simply M, was published in late October 1998 in Australia, and was later a bestseller in America and Italy. It was named a New York Times Book Review Notable Book of the Year and won the National Biography Award in Australia and a second Victorian Premier’s Award for Non-Fiction.
His collection of three pulp crime novellas – Pig’s Blood and other fluids was published in December 1999.
About the author:
Peter Robb was born in Toorak in 1946 and grew up in Australia and New Zealand. He went to Europe in 1971 and worked there variously as a nightclub bouncer in England, a philologist in Finland and a teacher in France, and travelled in Italy and other countries around the Mediterranean. In the mid-seventies he returned to Australia and for several years he taught English to immigrants and prisoners in Sydney and wrote for ephemeral radical papers. In 1978 he set off for South America but stopped in Naples instead. He spent most of the next fifteen years in Naples and southern Italy, interspersed with sojourns in Brazil, and at the end of 1992 returned to Sydney. He has taught at the University of Melbourne, the University of Oulu in Finland, the Instituto Universitario Orientale in Naples and is currently the first CAL Non-Fiction Writer- in- Residence at UTS. Robb will be attached to the Creative Practices Area in the UTS Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, working with Master of Arts in Non-fiction Writing students as well as lecturing on narrative and non-fiction.
A number of Peter’s books will be available for sale at the talk and Peter will be signing copies of his books.
