David Helfgott, one of Australia’s most prolific and treasured musicians, is returning to City Recital Hall Angel Place for two very special performances where he will perform the music that captured our hearts and captivated his soul – the famous Shine Concerto (Rachmaninov Piano Concerto No.3) – with The Metropolitan Orchestra on Thursday 9 August and Friday 10 August at 8pm.

David Helfgott has enthralled audiences on his current European tour with the mesmerising brilliance he brings to this signature piece and received a 16 minute standing ovation after his performance of the Rachmaninov Piano Concerto No.3 under conductor Mathias Foremny and the Stuttgart Symphoniker at the famous Musikverein Concert Hall in Vienna.
Co-presenter of this concert, Andrew McKinnon, said “The ‘Rach 3’ has come to be David’s trademark piece and a parallel for his triumphant life story, made famous after the release of the 1996 Academy Award winning film Shine based on this talented pianist’s life.”
“Also, the Rachmaninov Piano Concerto No. 3 is widely considered to be one of the most complex and demanding works in the romantic repertoire, and the last time David performed this piece in Sydney was over a decade ago. So to get the opportunity to see David perform this piece is indeed very special and very rare.”

For the Rach 3, David will be joined by The Metropolitan Orchestra, a versatile, vibrant and experienced orchestra that performs under the considered direction of Artistic Director and Chief Conductor Sarah-Grace Williams.

In addition to the Rach 3, David will also perform Bach’s Italian Concerto and Beethoven’s Sonata Op.57 “The Appassionata”.
