Thunderstorm is a reflection of the tumultuous social conditions from the twentieth year of Guangxu Emperor (1894) to 1920. The story between two families, eight characters over the expanse of one day is implicated by thirty years of love and hate. Not only are ethical and class disputes raised, but also clashes between the individual, their environment, and the times they live in.
With rich characterisation, sharp conflicts and a tight structure, Thunderstorm conveys authentic “Chinese affairs” with an authentic “Chinese way of feeling and thinking”. The high aesthetic appeal of its characters has again and again attracted audiences around the world to admire this classic Chinese play.
This is not the first time that Cathay Playhouse has presented the work of CAO Yu, who is honoured as the “Shakespeare of the Orient”. Cathay’s productions of CAO Yu’s Sunrise (2006) and Family (2008) achieved both artistic and box office success. The production of Thunderstorm is directed by our resident director, Ms. WANG Hui-Li, and consists some of our most experienced and highly acclaimed cast.
*All performances in Mandarin with Chinese and English subtitles.
*3 hours 15 minutes, including 15-minute interval.
