May Gibbs’ gumnut babies have long been a favourite of Australian children and adults alike. And who wasn’t scared of the Banksia Men as a child?
An accomplished botanical artist, conservationist, skilled portrait painter and sharp caricaturist, May Gibbs was one of the few women to attain commercial success as an illustrator.
Before she turned her hand to children’s illustration and the iconic Snugglepot and Cuddlepie, Gibbs created posters and magazine covers for the suffragette movement.
Robert Holden reveals a complex portrait of the life of May Gibbs, whose beloved stories and illustrations have made her an almost fairytale figure in Australian culture.
