2012 marks the Diamond Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II, who came to the British throne in 1952. Queen Elizabeth has a special relationship with Sydney and Australia. In 1954, she became the first reigning monarch to visit Australia. She has since made many visits, including official visits to open the Sydney Opera House in 1973 and to mark the sesqui-centenary of the City of Sydney in 1992.
In honour of the Diamond Jubilee, the City Archives presents a selection of photographs of Queen Elizabeth. This exhibition explores her many visits to Sydney during her 60 year reign.
Join Councillor Phillip Black for a talk around this exhibition, exploring the fact that Kings Cross was once Queens Cross and drawing comparisons and contrasts between Queen Elizabeth II’s 60 year reign and Queen Victoria’s 60 year reign.
