Optimum Viewing Distance is an exercise in cinematic archaeology. The title refers to a sense of historical and geographical remove as well as the placement of the viewer within the installation. Dabek’s artistic practice encompasses a number of forms and mediums, including photography, video, sound, and interactive media.
Much of Dabek’s recent work coalesces around ideas engaged with the recent past and in particular the idea of a present haunted by the spectral vestiges of Modernity. The show seeks to immerse the viewer in a cinematic dream world were personal memories and historic images intertwine.
Ryszard Dabek currently lectures at and is the Unit Coordiantor at Sydney College of the Arts in Film and Digital Arts. “Optimum Viewing Distance” is open to the public form April 27 until May 13.
Opening Hours: Thursday – Sunday, 12 – 5 pm.
