An easter egg feast for Aussie easter icons

Sydney – 4 April 2012 – An Easter egg feast for WILD LIFE Sydney’s resident bilbies has kicked off a range of activities planned over the school holidays to reacquaint the public with one of our most iconic and endangered creatures.

The Aussie Easter icons today enjoyed the brightly-coloured Easter egg delights, which were prepared by the attraction’s team of keepers in the lead up to Easter.

Home to an all-female colony of four long-eared, silky-furred bilbies, visitors can learn first-hand about the threats these icons face in the wild and actions they can take to help conserve the rapidly declining population. Over the Easter break, the attraction will also donate a portion of all sales of chocolate bilbies to the Australian Wildlife Conservation’s bilby projects.

“Over the school holidays, we’re aiming to redirect the attention back onto one of our beloved national icons – the bilbies – who are currently experiencing a severe population decline as a result of food competition and habitat destruction,” said Michael Drinkwater, Life Sciences Manager, WILD LIFE Sydney.

With as little as 600 bilbies believed to be remaining in the wild, WILD LIFE Sydney will host daily bilby talks and feeds as part of its school holiday program in a bid to educate visitors on their endangered status. Visitors to WILD LIFE Sydney can also participate in their own animal egg hunt, taking place daily over the school holidays.

While the females are currently running the show, the curatorial team at WILD LIFE Sydney hope to shortly introduce male bilbies to the colony as part of the attraction’s successful conservation and breeding programme.
