NSW Parliament Plein Air painting prize 2012

Out in the Plein Air at the NSW Parliament

This May, the walls of the NSW Parliament will be transformed into a celebration of the many and diverse landscapes that make up our great State. From cityscapes, to urban, rural and natural scenes, many unique visions will be on display as part of the 2012 NSW Parliament Plein Air Painting Prize.

One of the only art prizes in Australia to celebrate this unique painting tradition, the NSW Parliament Plein Air Painting Prize is an acquisitive art prize of $20,000 awarded for the best ‘en plein air’ painting of a New South Wales subject. Popularised by the impressionists, plein air painting occurs almost entirely outdoors, where the artist can engage directly with the landscape and its shifting colours, light and compositions.

First held in 2008, the Prize has grown steadily over the past few years, with many artists seeking the prize money and the opportunity to become part of the NSW Parliament Collection – one of the most significant art collections in Australia. Past entrants and winners have included the likes of Euan Macleod, Rodney Pople and Noel McKenna for his work ‘My Backyard’ (pictured).

The NSW Parliament Plein Air Painting Prize will run from 1st May – 31st May 2012. Entry is free, and doors are open Monday to Friday from 8.30am to 4.00pm. For more information, visit www.pleinair.com.au

The exhibition of finalists will be on display at the NSW Parliament from Tuesday 1 May through to Thursday 31st May. Entry is FREE and doors are open Monday to Friday from 8.30am to 4.00pm. A special Sunday opening will also be held on Sunday 20 May from 10.00am to 4.00pm, and doors will be open until 8.30pm for two night viewings on Wednesday 23rd and Wednesday 30th May.
