Created, organised and photographed in 1997, the original PORTRAIDS® exhibition comprised black and white fine art portraits of forty prominent Australian identities from diverse industries including art, sports, entertainment and environmental causes. It helped raise awareness of HIV/AIDS in Australia.
PORTRAIDS® became a National Touring Exhibition, with its inauguration at Australia’s Parliament House in Canberra. The opening served as the launch for the events of World AIDS Day 1997, the annual international HIV/AIDS awareness campaign.
In poignant divergence from their usual portrayal, PORTRAIDS® did not exalt the subjects as stars, but rather revealed them as human beings. Through this insightful representation, the idea was to convey the non-discriminatory nature of HIV/AIDS, to remind us we are all equally vulnerable.
