In her passionate Big Ideas key note speech at the Melbourne International Writers’ Festival, Sophie Cunningham rattled off a list of statistics that would make even the most begrudging of feminists sit up and pay attention. Despite the fact that more Australian women read and write, the publishing industry is dominated by male reviewers, the majority of books reviewed are written by men, and this year, the Miles Franklin shortlist was entirely male. A group of women, including recent Meanjin editor Sophie Cunningham, and author Kirsten Tranter, have responded by inaugurating the Stella Prize – an annual literary prize for Australian women’s writing. But does such an award create ghettos of readerships, or strengthen the one diverse literary landscape? And is creating a literary prize for women enough? Join Pip Smith in conversation with Kirsten Tranter as they discuss gender bias in the world of reading, writing, and publishing.
Kirsten Tranter is a critically acclaimed author, one of the founders of the new award for Australian women’s writing, The Stella Prize, and the discussion series and blog When Genres Attack!
Pip Smith is the founder of Penguin Plays Rough
