The Australia Day celebrations in Sydney are befitting of Australia’s oldest and biggest city with events and activities spread far and wide, on the beaches, in the backyards, in the sky and in parks, it’s a day to celebrate in true Aussie style.

IN THE CITY:

• Living Australian Outdoor Gallery Exhibition, winners from 2012 Living Australian Online Photographic Competition will have their entries showcased for the public to enjoy.

• Woggan-ma-gule Morning Ceremony, supported by the Royal Botanic Gardens Trust, is a visually spectacular Indigenous ceremony honouring age-old custodial traditions, commemorating our past and celebrating our future.

• Sydney’s Biggest Backyard – Australia Day in Hyde Park is the best place to soak up the festivities and bustling atmosphere. Relax on the grass and enjoy the entertainment and barbequed fare. The kids will love the ‘have a go’ sport and activities. Kids and adults alike will dance and sing along to the sensational entertainment, including Aussie legend John Williamson, lined up for the Main Stage throughout the day and the moving Lord Mayor’s Citizenship Ceremony presented by the City of Sydney.

• Reel Australia Short Film finalists will be screened on The BIG Telly. Come and be entertained by this year’s finalists, and Hereford Prime Cooking Demonstrations and great moments from Australian Television. The winner of the Reel Australia Short Film Competition will also be announced on the day. Make sure you’re there to see who wins!

• The much loved NRMA Motorfest is back on the Australia Day calendar. Macquarie Street and College Street will host an impressive display of over 1,000 vintage and classic cars to thrill car enthusiasts.

ON THE HARBOUR & ALONG THE WATER’S EDGE:

• The Body Science Great Australian Swim, proudly supported by Destination NSW, will see hundreds of amateur and professional swimmers take the plunge when the second series rolls into Sydney on Australia Day. The final of the series is being held on the doorstep of the Sydney Opera House in Farm Cove on our national holiday. Join Olympic and Iron Man champion Ky Hurst along with his fellow Olympic swimmers for the 2.2km swim in the harbour or a more casual 750m splash. The Body Science Great Australian Swim Series is about participation for all ages and abilities and includes an anything goes category and a 300m Junior Kids Swim.

• The Ferrython will once again let loose those four sassy and spirited old gals, the much-cherished little green and yellow catamarans, to race up and down Sydney Harbour. And as always, they’ll be racing at full throttle in a battle for line honours under the Harbour Bridge.

• The Awesome Forces – RAAF Defence Aerial Display is an impressive feat above Sydney Harbour, watch the Royal Australian Air Force F/A-18 Hornet and the Hawks as they zoom over the harbour – be sure to look up when you hear them coming!

• The 176th Australia Day Regatta, the world’s oldest continuously conducted annual sailing Regatta, will take place throughout the afternoon, with events for all classes of yachts and 18ft skiffs, conducted by the Royal Sydney Yacht Squadron on behalf of the Australia Day Regatta Inc. Traditional and Classic Yachts from around the nation, some up to a century old, are being invited to take part in this historic event.

• Catch some talented musicians perform smooth jazz while the sun sets and enjoy refreshments and a licensed bar at the Sydney Ports Jazz on the Water concert at Pirrama Park.

• The Rocks Australia Day, presented by Sydney Harbour Foreshore Authority, is a free outdoor “Festival of the Voice” featuring roots, soul, pop, cabaret, reggae, jazz, blues, rock, folk and Indigenous music performances across various stages and The Rocks laneways.

• Darling Harbour Australia Day activities include a culturally diverse entertainment programme as well as the Darling Harbour Australia Day Spectacular – a stunning multimedia symphony of light and music, culminating in a fireworks extravaganza over Cockle Bay from 7pm.
