This fascinating documentary, directed/filmed and narrated by British naturalist Stewart McPherson with input from Sir David Attenborough, focuses on the summits of these unique sandstone plateaus that have remained isolated for millions of years.
Breathtaking cinematography takes you on a journey documenting the discovery and exploration of these remarkable mountains whose sheer vertical cliffs up to 1000 metres tall meant they were inaccessible until 125 years ago when a ledge was discovered that led explorers to an unimaginable world that had never before been seen by mankind.
Spectacular carnivorous pitchers plants, flora with iridescent leaves that flicker electric blue across the landscape, bewildering insects that have evolved in the often barren landscape are part of the fascinating story of these iconic mountains. The film also seeks to enlighten the audience about the need to conserve the unique plants which endure atop of these mysterious lost worlds.
Stewart McPherson is the author of ten books on plants, animals and unusual places, and in the process discovered and named thirty-five new species, varieties and forms of plants including several of the largest carnivorous pitcher plants known. A decade ago, he undertook the first of twenty expeditions to explore the mysterious ‘lost world’ plateaus of South America. He published a book (Lost Worlds of the Guiana Highlands) and produced his documentary. Stewart is committed to the conservation and preservation of these extraordinary mountains.
Proceeds from the night will support the Friends’ PlantBank appeal. PlantBank is a world class research, conservation and education centre and home to the largest native seed bank in Australia – the ‘environmental insurance plan’ for our nation’s plant life. PlantBank will be built by The Royal Botanic Garden & Domain Trust at The Australian Botanic Garden, Mount Annan.
