“A sincere artist is not one who makes a faithful attempt to put on to canvas what is in front of him, but one who tries to create something which is, in itself, a living thing.”
- William Dobell
Although William Dobell won the Archibald Prize three times, his unique style of painting was not without controversy; in 1943, his winning painting of Joshua Smith “Portrait of an artist”, was challenged on the grounds it was caricature.
Paul Delprat, artist and principal of the Julian Ashton Art School gives us his very personal view of one of Australia’s most celebrated artists, and explores Dobell’s ongoing influence on artists who have followed in his footsteps.
