In archaeological circles wells and cess-pits are highly regarded as the richest source of artefactual evidence, supporting the old saying that ‘one person’s rubbish is another person’s treasure’. After falling into disuse the wells (and cess-pits) were used as rubbish disposal. Through selected case studies, Anita Yousif, archaeologist with GML, will examine techniques and fabrics used for well construction, the nature and extent of well contents and the archaeological methods applied to well excavation.
