The man who is an image

With their filmic references to Charlie Chaplin and Jacques Tati and the absurdist humour of Samuel Beckett and Eugène Ionesco, the photographs of Gilbert Garcin conjure a sweetly existential universe. His miniature black and white images playfully lure the viewer into a whimsically satirical world in which the artist and his wife are intrepid explorers. Made using a deceptively simple form of tabletop tableaux, each image nonetheless touches the more fundamental absurdities of the human condition.

A former lamp-maker by trade, Gilbert Garcin did not begin his photographic career until after he retired in his mid-sixties. Combining the vivid energy of a new-found creative form with the perspective of age, the works are both witty and profound. Now in his eighties, his work has caught the imagination of the international art world and is held in many important public and private collections.
